Martin Not to put too fine a point to it, but SLES10 is a bit long in the tooth as a base OS. Once you start going the cpan path to install stuff you're poluting your package managemnet system's idea of what's installed and undermining your ability to keep things updated via the OS tools which kindof defeats the point of using a commercial supported distro in the first place.
I have a full working Su SE 8.2 installation and would like to update to KDE 3.2.3.
Then, change your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc file to start 3.2 beta rather than 3.1. I have an old version of Mandrake that came with KDE 2.2.2 and upgrading to 3.1 and now to 3.2 was easy. If I open it on the other screen the window appears, but the upper line, where normally "Befehlsfenster - Konsole" appears, does not appear.
It took me nearly a full day to compile everything, but the number of hitches were low. I'am not able to activate the window, so I can not type anything in it.
I also removed my kdmrc files in /etc/opt/kde3 and /opt/kde3 before I reinstalled although I don't know if this was necessary.
I think there might be some funny stuff with the kde login mananger module for kde 3.2 on Su SE 8.2 so I have not changed any login settings since the reinstall.
